This Mom Entrepreneur Has Built An Ethnic Home Décor Brand Of Handmade Products
Making the best use of social media platforms, Gurgaon-based mompreneur Gunjan Loomba Babbar has started an ethnic home décor brand — Shabari. Varied offerings in the ethnic home décor space, handmade products, and budget-friendly prices make this brand ahead of the crowd.
About the founder
From a fauji family, Gunjan strived to pursue diverse work fields in her professional life. It was after marriage, and serving 12 years in marketing and sales at British Airways, her work-life schedule became hectic and she was exhausted. The one-woman army juggled between many things but always kept her children as the first priority. So in 2006 she quit her job to spend more time with both her kids.
But being a mother of two did not stop Gunjan from wanting to step out of her comfort zone and create something valuable. With a creative and mindful side to her, she preferred up-cycling things available at home rather than buying them from outside. To start off, she created paintings, wall art, and even sculptures; all created by her. Impressed with the beautiful outcome of her creations, Gunjan decided to pursue this as a business.
Affordable prices for everyone to purchase and pretty designs for everyone to love, Shabari was born.
About the ethnic home décor brand
Shabari has 250+ SKUs that include wall art, dining sets, utility trays, tea boxes, cutlery, among other products, and are priced between Rs. 175 – Rs. 5000. The manufacturing unit is set up in Gurgaon, housing a few machines and workers. They offer products to customers of all ages who cherish beautiful, aesthetic creations as ethnic home décor items. During any festive season the brand welcomes high traffic, and they process a large number of orders as the demand for gifting increases multifold at the time. The company also works with bakers, chefs, jewellery makers, interior designers, and architects to customise or enhance their store décor.
Considering the market, most brands sell mass produced, limited range products to people, but Shabari offers high product variations, in terms of design and personal customisations. An artistic mind of this Boss Mom is the key USP, and thus the flexibility that a customer gets with Shabari makes it the go-to brand for ethnic home décor items.
They deliver across India, and also internationally to countries like Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Alongside tying-up with multiple retail shops to cater to the masses in cities across India, and they stock their products in 3-4 army stores, too.
Gunjan’s next move is to secure a larger space for manufacturing and also launch the brand’s website, which she is working on already.
Surely, ‘I Boss Mom’
Gunjan shares an unforgettable memory, very close to her heart; her first stall exhibition. While having a chit-chat over coffee, Gunjan asked her friend to critically review Shabari’s products, before going commercially live.
“Immediately, without hesitation, she told me to go for it. It was surely followed by a pep-talk that every friend gives. And then, a few days later she offered to showcase my products in a stall at a building function.”
The response was overwhelming; queues of praises, and people to buy her products. This ultimately gave her the confidence to know that she was on the right rack.
Even though she has come a long way from back then, the mom founder’s grit is such that she herself gets down to the shop floor to hand-make products when there is intrinsic customisation required by a client or an exclusive order to deliver.
“Post-lockdown was a boost for the brand. People knew about my work, and the moment delivery services opened up, I processed and dispatched 42 couriers at one go; also hand-delivering some around the city.”
Being the first and the only entrepreneur in the family, her husband, parents, and in-laws are remarkably proud and supportive of her. They made sure to be there whenever she needed a helping hand, whether it was in business or managing things at home.
The Boss Mom signs off with an inspiring message for every mom entrepreneur,
“Do all, that gives you happiness, and don’t let it fade away with your motherhood.”
